GOOD DRINKING: Aldgate Ridge 2003 Sauvignon Blanc

This superb single-vineyard Adelaide Hills wine has a fine fragrance of doughy, lemony, cashew and gooseberry fruit and shows great intensity in the mouth. It has nicely concentrated fruit and finishes clean and dry but soft. SEE CLIPPING

UNCORKED: Aldgate Ridge 2003 Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon blanc whites of the "gooseberry and cat's pee" variety don't go with food the way this elegant, crisp Adelaide Hills one will. Green-tinted pale straw in colour, the wine has grassy, pineapple-edged scents and shows fresh, vibrant honeydew melon and kiwifruit flavours on the front of the palate. There is restrained spice on the middle palate and dry slatey acid on the finish. SEE CLIPPING

UNCORKED: Aldgate Ridge 2003 Sauvignon Blanc

Adelaide Hills sauvignon blanc might consistently be Australia's best. This example has piercing varietal character. There are hints of fruit salad and gooseberry on the nose, and the palate starts off smoother than some, then a tart, lip-smacking flavour finishes it off, Four stars. SEE CLIPPING

CURRENTLY DIVINE: Aldgate Ridge 1999 Pinot Noir

The prospect of finding an Aussie pinot that resembles a Burgundy is something that exclites a lot of people, myself included. And I'm excited by the Aldgate ... A deeply coloured wine with juicy cherry-red berry, farmyard, undergrowth and smoky oak aromas took me straight to the southern exit from Beaune and into Pommard and further on Volnay.
